SHAH ALAM: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says that it is "unconstitutional" to bring down a party leaders with statutory declarations (SD), with the Bersatu president warning that any political party leader could suffer such a fate.
"I hear some are collecting signatures to overthrow the party president. This goes against the party constitution.
"If the president can be brought down with a collection of signatures, those (Bersatu leaders) on the stage with me can also be overthrown the same way," the former prime minister and Perikatan Nasional chairman said in his keynote address at Bersatu's eighth annual general assembly at the Ideal Convention Centre here on Saturday (Sept 6) night.
As Muhyiddin was delivering his address, a delegate began shouting that the allegations were untrue.
Security personnel then tried to calm him down but a brief scuffle broke out. A few delegates then stood up and shouted "Long live Tan Sri!"
Prior to the assembly, there was talk of SDs from the Bersatu division leaders calling for Muhyiddin to step down as party president.
Muhyiddin reminded members that the Bersatu has a party constitution.
"Obey the party's constitution if we want our party to be orderly, proper, harmonious and peaceful.
"Stop the slander and incitement. Avoid conflicts among ourselves. Discard all negative attitudes that weaken us.
"Remember, our party did not begin with wealth and money, nor with promises of positions and status. We started with nothing," he added.
He said Bersatu members have the sincerity and will to fight for nation's salvation.
In his speech, Muhyiddin said that Bersatu is fully prepared for the coming Sabah state elections.
He added Bersatu would fight for Sabah's right to receive 40% of the state's revenue to be returned to the state in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution.
"Bersatu and Perikatan will also focus on efforts to drive Sabah's development, eradicate poverty, expand basic infrastructure facilities, improve the educational achievements of Sabah's children, provide better job opportunities, increase the people's income and protect the welfare of the people in Sabah," he said.
