No lawsuits filed by parents of expelled Mara students, says chairman

MELAKA: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has not been sued by the parents of MRSM students who were expelled for bullying, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Mara chairman said no letter of demand (LOD) had been served to them.

"So far, I have not received any LOD. When the threat (of lawsuits) were made, I wondered what basis they had to sue as the actions carried out were in accordance with Mara regulations," he said after the launching of the "Halal Learning Provider" initiative at the Mara Professional College here on Thursday (Sept 4).

He said while some had questioned the "you touch, you go" catchphrase introduced to curb bullying, it reflected the government's seriousness in tackling the issue.

He said Mara's firm stance on bullying is grounded in the principle of justice, regardless of social status or family background.

"Even when influential individuals attempted to appeal, I did not entertain them as this principle was made clear from the beginning.

"Every student admitted must sign a pledge and we cannot compromise on this," he said.

On June 27, Dr Asyraf announced that six MRSM students in Terengganu were expelled after being found guilty of bullying and injuring a Form Two student.

A month later, six students at Melaka MRSM were suspended and recommended for expulsion for bullying.
