PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has been informed about a recommendation by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to cap the Anti-Bullying Tribunal at 18 years old.
Communications Minister and Unity Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the matter was conveyed by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, after chairing a high-level meeting on strengthening anti-bullying prevention mechanisms yesterday (Sept 2).
The meeting, organised by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department (BHEUU), was attended by senior officials from more than 10 ministries and agencies, including the Education Ministry, Health Ministry, Home Ministry, and Suhakam.
Azalina has been tasked with leading a Special Committee on Bullying Issues, which serves as the central platform for coordinating inter-ministry and inter-agency action.
"This is merely a preliminary suggestion as there will be more follow-up through a series of meetings next week to review all aspects and plan the implementation of the tribunal.
"At the same time, Azalina mentioned that a roadshow will be conducted with townhall sessions featuring various stakeholders, starting in Kuala Lumpur and extending to other states to gather feedback from the public and stakeholders.
"This roadshow aims to improve the process, laws, and mechanisms for the tribunal. It is part of efforts to collect inputs from the public, with details on the location, timing, and method to be determined by Azalina’s office," he said to the press after the weekly post-Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday (Sept 3).
