MACC nabs university association staff for misusing funds

MELAKA: A 47-year-old secretary of an academic staff association at a public university here has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly abusing his position by using the association's funds to pay his wife’s legal and court order costs amounting to RM84,500.

The male suspect has been remanded for five days until September 7, following an order issued by Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani after an application was made by the MACC at the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here on Wednesday (September 3).

According to MACC sources, the suspect was detained at 5.10pm on Tuesday (September 2) when he appeared to provide a statement at the Melaka MACC headquarters in Alai here.

The suspect had allegedly committed the offence last year by using the association's funds for his personal use to settle the court case of his wife.

Meanwhile, Melaka MACC director Datuk Adi Supian Shafie, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and stated that the case is currently being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
