Biker killed in three-vehicle crash in Perai


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A motorcyclist was killed and his bike destroyed after catching fire in a three-vehicle crash at KM140.8 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) southbound, in Perai, here on Friday (Aug 29).

Muhammad Syahim Rusman, 28, died at the scene from severe injuries, while another motorcyclist was injured in the accident, which also involved a trailer lorry.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of Firefighting and Rescue Operations John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at about 12.43pm and a team from the Perai Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.

"Upon arrival, firefighters found that the accident involved three vehicles -- the victim's motorcycle, another motorcycle and a trailer lorry.

"The victim was confirmed dead at the scene, while the 37-year-old rider was injured and sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the trailer lorry, who is in his 30s, escaped unhurt," he said in a statement.

He added that firefighters carried out overhaul works at the site to ensure there was no further danger to road users. The operation was concluded at 2.11pm. - Bernama
