Motorcyclist killed after swerving in front of MPV in Ipoh

IPOH: A 22-year-old motorcyclist died while receiving treatment at the Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom Hospital in Cameron Highlands following an accident with a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at Jalan Keramat Pulai here.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the victim died on Sunday (Aug 9) at about 9.45pm, following the 4.30pm incident.

ACP Najib said the motorcyclist is believed to have swerved onto the MPV's path before the incident.

"The victim was headed towards Simpang Pulai from Cameron Highlands.

"He tried to overtake a vehicle and move onto the opposite lane where the MPV was heading from the opposite direction," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 10).

"The driver of the MPV tried to avoid the motorcycle and swerved to the side of the road, but the motorcycle slammed into the front of the vehicle," he said.

ACP Najib said there were also two other motorcyclists, 24 and 25, who were involved in the incident.

"Both also fell onto the road and sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the MPV was unharmed," he said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

"Those with information about the incident or recorded footage are urged to come forward to assist the investigation.

"The police urge all road users to observe traffic rules and be careful when overtaking a vehicle," he said.

"They need to ensure the road is truly safe before manoeuvring to ensure their own safety and also to prevent reckless driving," he added.
