Shop assistant pleads guilty to raping underage girl

SEREMBAN: An 18-year-old shop assistant pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here to a charge of raping his 14-year-old girlfriend.

He did not contest the charge after it was read to him before judge Surita Budin on Wednesday (Aug 27).

He was charged with committing the offence in a hotel room here at around 9.30am on Aug 19.

The accused was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and caning upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Balkis Zunaidi then asked the court for a next mention date for sentencing pending a report from the Social Welfare Department.

She also offered the accused bail of RM5,000 with one surety.

Judge Surita set bail accordingly but when asked by the court, the accused said there was no one present to post it for him.

He said he earned about RM1,400 a month and that his mother and seven younger siblings lived in Mersing, Johor.

The judge then fixed Sept 29 for submission of the report and sentencing.
