Refer to MetMalaysia for quake updates, says Ahmad Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the public to remain calm and rely solely on official updates from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) following minor earthquakes reported in Johor early Sunday (Aug 24).

In a Facebook post, Zahid said MET Malaysia is monitoring the situation and will issue updates as needed.

"I am aware of the minor earthquake reported in Segamat this morning. MET Malaysia is conducting follow-up monitoring and will release information from time to time," he said.

Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, warned against spreading unverified information that could cause confusion.

"Stay calm and refer only to official sources. Avoid sharing false news that may spark panic," he added, while also calling on Malaysians to pray for continued safety and protection.

Earlier, MET Malaysia reported a 4.1-magnitude tremor in Segamat at 6.13am, followed by a 2.8-magnitude aftershock at 9am in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, about 28km northwest of Kluang.

Police confirmed receiving three reports of property damage, but no injuries or fatalities were reported. - Bernama
