Miri retiree loses over RM2.5mil in online investment scam

KUCHING: A retiree in his 60s from Miri has lost over RM2.5mil after falling victim to an online investment scam.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the victim lodged a police report after realising he had not received any returns from an investment after making several transfers to an account provided by a suspect.

He said the victim came across an ad on Facebook in mid-April and was told to download an app to make investments.

"The victim made multiple transactions totalling over RM2.5mil before realising he had been scammed," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 24).

Comm Mancha reminded the public to always be cautious of online investment offers and to conduct background checks on platforms or individuals offering such schemes.
