IPOH: A 67-year-old retiree lost about RM150,000 after falling victim to an investment scam.
Kampar OCPD Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud said the victim encountered an investment advertisement on social media in late September last year that used the brand of a famous sports company.
“The complainant clicked on the link in the advertisement and was subsequently added to a Telegram group.
“The complainant was attracted by the advertisements posted by the suspect, who promised lucrative monthly returns,” he said in a statement on Sunday (July 19).
Supt Nazri said the complainant then transferred about RM130,000 into personal bank accounts provided by the suspect between September 2025 and June 2026.
“In early July 2026, when the complainant wanted to withdraw the investment capital and profits, the suspect instructed the complainant to make several additional payments totalling RM20,000.
“However, the complainant became suspicious when the suspect continued demanding further payments to facilitate the withdrawal of the capital and profits, but the complainant still did not receive the promised returns,” he said.
Supt Nazri said the victim subsequently lodged a police report on July 18 and that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
He urged the public to verify the legitimacy of any investment scheme with the relevant authorities before investing.
“They are also advised to check the provided bank account numbers through the Semak Mule portal or contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) through its 997 hotline if they become victims of online financial scams,” he said.
