Two men arrested for armed robbery at hair salon in Sibu


SIBU: Two men have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery that occurred at a hair salon in Jalan Chambers here on Monday (Aug 18).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident happened at about 11pm, when the complainant and her friend were resting in the salon when he was approached by an unknown man.

“The suspect pointed an object that looked like a pistol at the forehead of the complainant’s friend and forced him to hand over valuables. Out of fear for his safety, the victim surrendered two smartphones before the suspect fled the scene," said ACP Zulkipli in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 20).

Acting on information and investigation results, police arrested two men aged 25 and 44 at about 10.30am the following day.

Preliminary checks revealed that the first suspect had 11 past offences in his criminal record involving five housebreaking and theft cases, one summons case and five drug-related cases.

The second suspect had five offences on his record, including one for impersonating a public official, one theft case and three drug-related cases.

Police have also seized several items, including a replica pistol, two smartphones belonging to the victim and a multi-purpose knife.

“The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery using a weapon.

Upon conviction, the offence carries imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping,” ACP Zulkipli said.

Both suspects have been remanded for seven days until Aug 27 to assist investigations.
