Insurance agent remanded five days for allegedly abetting RM21mil investment scam

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a five-day remand order against a female insurance agent suspected of abetting in an investment scam worth about RM21mil.

Magistrate Izra Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted the remand order until Aug 24 following MACC’s application at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (Aug 20).

According to sources, the woman, who is in her 40s, was detained at about 9pm on Tuesday (Aug 19) when she turned up at the MACC headquarters here to have her statement recorded.

“She is believed to have committed the offence between 2023 and this year.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that 22 investors were duped into placing RM21mil into a cooperative in the Klang Valley.

"However, the money was never received by the cooperative, and the investors were instead issued fake investment certificates,” the source said.

MACC senior director of investigations Datuk Zainul Arus confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
