Free parking after 6pm in Kuala Terengganu from June 1

KUALA TERENGGANU: Motorists parking within the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) administrative area will no longer be charged parking fees after 6pm beginning Monday (June 1).

Kuala Terengganu mayor Lizan Che Mat said the initiative aimed to provide greater convenience while easing financial burden for the public.

However, he said enforcement action would still be taken against motorists who park irresponsibly, particularly those whose vehicles obstruct traffic or inconvenience other road users.

"Starting June 1, 2026, parking enforcement will only be carried out until 6pm. Users parking within the MBKT area can enjoy free parking after that time.

"However, motorists who park indiscriminately and obstruct traffic will still be fined, as it is a serious offence. We will not compromise on the matter," he said when contacted on Wednesday.

Lizan also said MBKT will appoint a new contractor to manage and enhance the city's parking system soon, a process expected to take between three and four months.

During the transition period, parking fee collection will continue to be carried out manually before the system is upgraded to a fully digital platform.

“We will set up parking ticket sales booths in the affected areas for the next three to four months.

"Once the new contractor has been appointed, all parking payment transactions will be conducted digitally to ensure a more systematic, organised and user-friendly experience for the public," he said. - Bernama
