IPOH: Perak PKR chief Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri has been appointed as a senator to the Dewan Rakyat.
Mohamad Hairul Amir, 38, won against Perak PAS Ulamak chief Muhammad Zulkifli Muhammad Zakaria, 57, following a vote at the state assembly sitting here on Thursday (Sept 10).
Mohamad Hairul Amir polled 33 votes while Muhammad Zulkifli got 26 votes.
Teja assemblyman Sandrea Ng proposed the motion to nominate Mohamad Hairul Amir and seconded by Lintang assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Zolkafly Harun.
Muhammad Zulkifli was proposed by Manjoi assemblyman Mohd Hafez Sabri and supported by Sungai Manik assemblyman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin.
Mohamad Hairul Amir is a special officer to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He has held the state PKR chairmanship since 2024.
He replaced Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who was appointed in May 2023 and his term ended in late August.
The other senator from Perak is Ipoh Barat Umno chairman Datuk Shamsuddin Abd Ghaffar, who was re-elected from December 2024 to December 2027.
