Pengkalan Chepa MP ejected from Dewan Rakyat, suspended two days

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition lawmaker Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary has been ejected and suspended from the Dewan Rakyat for two days.

This came after the Pengkalan Chepa MP did not adhere to Deputy Speaker Alice Lau’s order to stop interjecting on Monday (Aug 18).

As Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar was winding up, Ahmad Marzuk pressed for answers.

He asked why a non‑Muslim consultancy was appointed for the Tabung Haji brand rejuvenation process.

The minister said there was a stringent approval process to follow.

“If I want to raise such matters, 23 non‑Muslim companies were also appointed when Pengkalan Chepa was the deputy Religious Affairs Minister,” said Mohd Na’im.

“Regardless of then or now, the priority is always Tabung Haji,” he added.

Ahmad Marzuk accused the minister of misleading the House and again sought clarification.

“He’s not answering the questions and is just spinning,” he said.

Lau then ordered the Opposition MP to leave the House for 30 minutes.

He continued speaking despite his microphone being turned off.

“Earlier I said 30 minutes, but you continued speaking without permission,” she said.

“Do you want two days,” she asked, as several voices said yes.

“Okay, then two days it is,” she said, and he was escorted from the Lower House.

At a press conference, Ahmad Marzuk said he was raising an issue over the Lembaga Tabung Haji brand rejuvenation process.

He said the minister chose not to answer his questions and added that it is disappointing to be ejected and suspended for two days.
