Muaythai packing a punch in popularity


MUAYTHAI was a topic of interest with the House being told that the country was becoming a regional organiser of repute for the martial arts sport.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli said there are a string of high-profile championships lined up till 2026, backed by robust government support and alignment with international sporting standards.

He said the Malaysian Muaythai Association hosted the 2025 National Championships, with coming events to include the Asean Senior and Junior Championship in August and two major international events in 2026 – the IFMA Senior World Championship and the inaugural IFMA World School Muaythai Championship.

He said the events formed part of Malaysia’s preparation for the 2025 and 2027 SEA Games, while also aiming to attract more youth participation in the combat sport.

“To strengthen the sport’s development, RM1.585mil was allocated through the Sports Matching Grant, RM247,000 via the National Sports Trust Fund, and RM55,000 under the Community Sports Fund for Muaythai competitions nationwide as of June,” he said.
