PETALING JAYA: Border agents have thwarted an attempt to smuggle out protected animals through Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal One on Saturday (July 26).
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) in a statement on Sunday said that a suspect was arrested at 10pm after he was detected attempting to smuggle the animals to Hyderabad, India.
“Scans on his luggage showed them containing the animals. The 38-year-old had been arrested for further investigation.
“Checks on the bag led to the discovery of two suspected Grey Langurs, two suspected Siamangs and two suspected Armadillos,” it said.
The agency added that all animals were protected species.
“The seized animals were estimated to be worth RM73,000.
“This effort mirrors the commitment by the MCBA in combating animal smuggling that could affect the country’s biodiversity as well as slander the country’s name on the international stage,” it said.
