Man arrested over alleged murder of mother in Tambunan

KOTA KINABALU: A man who was believed to have stabbed his mother to death in Tambunan district was detained when villagers personally took him to the police station on Friday.

Villagers had discovered the deceased 56-year-old woman at a rented house in Kg Katagayan at around 2pm, and had alerted the cops.

A manhunt was mounted for the 31-year-old suspect, who is her son, said Keningau OCPD SupT Erwansyah Abdul Basir, adding there were stab wounds on the victim’s body.

He said villagers who joined in the search had found the suspect in a hut at the nearby Kg Sukung, and brought him to the police station themselves.

“Investigators from the Keningau crime investigation unit took over the arrest while other teams conducted inspections at the location and seized several items believed relevant to the incident,” he said.

Supt Erwansyah said the victim’s body has been taken for a post-mortem to find out the cause of death while the case is being probed for murder.

“Investigations into the motive and chronology of the incident are being conducted as well,” he said.

He warned people against spreading unverified information or speculating on the case to maintain order and prevent disruptions to investigations.
