Three motorcyclists killed, 12 injured in highway accident near Seremban

PETALING JAYA: Three motorcyclists have died and another 12 were injured after a major incident involving 15 motorcycles, a lorry, and a car occurred at Kilometre 262 of the North-South Expressway (Plus) heading north at 3am on Thursday (July 24).

Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said preliminary investigations found that the group of 15 motorcycles was travelling together from Senawang towards Kuala Lumpur using the middle and right lanes of the North-South Expressway (northbound).

He noted the incident occurred after three motorcycles at the front of the group collided with each other, causing them to fall onto the road.

"This resulted in the other 12 motorcycles coming from behind being unable to avoid the fallen motorcycles and subsequently crashing into them.

"All involved riders then fell onto the road as a result of the collision.

"A car and a lorry were also hit on their rear and right side respectively by several of the fallen 12 motorcycles as a result," he said in a press statement on Thursday (July 24).

Three of the motorcyclists were pronounced dead at the scene upon the arrival of paramedics.

The other 12 motorcyclists were taken to the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban for further treatment, with two of them reportedly now in critical condition and receiving care in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The bodies of the three deceased motorcyclists were transported by police to the Forensic Department of Rembau Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Mohamad Hatta added that the case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"The police would like to advise all motorcyclists to ride with caution, avoid excessive speeding, and refrain from weaving in and out of traffic.

"In addition, reckless and dangerous riding can lead to a high risk of severe injury or death," he added.

He also urged anyone with information on the incident to contact investigating officer, Insp Tiew Chuan Jie, at 014-966 8399 or visit any nearby police station.
