Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) celebrated the graduation of its Class of 2025 at its 12th Congregation Ceremony recently.

The cohort encompassed 132 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) graduates, 33 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences graduates and a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education graduate.

Presiding over the ceremony was Prof David Burn, pro-vice chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, UK.

“As a world-class civic university, we exist to benefit society through our leading-edge research and education, locally and globally. Graduates, as you look forward to embarking upon the next chapter of your lives, I also want you to remember that you have a vital part to play in bringing this vision to life,” he said.

Congratulatory messages were also shared by Prof Dennis Wong, regional provost and group chief executive officer (East and South-East Asia) of Newcastle University and Prof Vishna Devi V Nadarajah, chief executive officer and provost of NUMed.

“You have succeeded in a time of rapid change — technological advances, climate urgency, and social transformation. Throughout, you’ve shown intellectual rigour, innovation and a drive to create meaningful change. As Newcastle graduates, you carry forward our shared purpose: to harness academic excellence and creativity for the benefit of individuals, organisations and society,” said Prof Wong.

“As you step forward into the next chapter of your lives, carry with you the values nurtured during your time at NUMed: integrity, empathy, and a passion for lifelong learning. Whether you pursue clinical practice, research, industry, or further studies, remember that your knowledge and character are powerful tools for positive change,” said Prof Vishna.

Besides that, the event recognised exceptional student achievements. The Walton Prize was presented to Yumna Elsadig Mohamed Elsayed, while Ghulam Mustafa Ansari received the TM Teoh Prize.

Graduates now join a growing global alumni network of over 270,000 alumni across the world. Several of this year’s MBBS graduates will be preparing for Foundation Doctor training in the UK this August, while others will commence their professional careers in Malaysia. This is made possible as NUMed’s MBBS programme is recognised by both the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC).
