KUANTAN: Two Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UnIPSAS) students were killed, while two healthcare staff were injured in an accident involving a motorcycle and an ambulance at a traffic light intersection near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Paya Besar, Jalan Gambang, on Tuesday (July 15) morning.
Acting Kuantan OCPD Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the incident occurred at about 11am when the ambulance, which was transporting a patient, was travelling from Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) towards Bukit Rangin.
"As the van was making a right turn at the traffic light intersection with its siren on, a motorcycle approaching from the direction of Gambang collided with it,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
The motorcyclist, Muhammad Zuhair Rifqi Abdul Jalil, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his pillion rider, Muhammad Firdaus Mohamad Zamri, succumed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the HTAA Red Zone.
The 49-year-old ambulance driver and his 43-year-old assistant were also injured and are currently receiving further treatment at the hospital, he added.
Supt Adli said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Meanwhile, UnIPSAS, in a Facebook post, extended its condolences to the families of the two students and prayed that their souls would be blessed and placed among the righteous.
"The late Muhammad Zuhair Rifqi and Muhammad Firdaus were individuals of noble character who loved religious knowledge. Both were former students of Al-Irsyad Islamic Secondary School up to Form 3 and had successfully memorised all 30 juz of the Quran,” the university said.
The university added that the two students’ passion for deepening their understanding of the Quran continued through their respective fields of study - a Diploma in Quran and Sunnah Studies and a Bachelor of Syariah with Judicial Administration (Honours).- Bernama
