KUALA LUMPUR: The remains of army commando Corporal Mohd Haswansir Julnasir, who died in a diving exercise off the coast of Kuantan, Pahang, were laid to rest at the Kampung Gusung Melanta Tesi Cemetery, Pulau Bum Bum, Semporna, Sabah, at 2.30am on Sunday (July 6).
In a statement, the army said the 30-year-old's body was first sent to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) in Pahang for a post-mortem before being flown to his hometown aboard a Royal Malaysian Air Force C-130 aircraft from Kuantan Air Base to Tawau at 7.30pm on Saturday.
"TDM will establish a Board of Inquiry to determine the exact cause of the incident. We urge the public to refrain from making any speculation and to respect the family's privacy during this difficult time.
"Army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan and all TDM personnel extend their deepest condolences to the family and mourn the loss of a highly skilled soldier," the statement read.
The late Corporal served in the elite Special Boat Squadron (SPK) under the 22nd Commando Regiment of the Grup Gerak Khas (GGK).
He was reported missing at 12.15pm on Thursday while taking part in a training exercise using a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA) in the waters off Dock Port, Kuantan.
A search and rescue operation was launched immediately, and his body was discovered around 10am Saturday by a navy surface patrol team.
The remains were found approximately 500m from the incident site, with all diving equipment and his M4 rifle still intact.
As a member of an elite unit, Mohd Haswansir was highly trained in amphibious assaults and maritime infiltration operations. The training exercise was part of ongoing efforts to maintain advanced combat readiness. - Bernama
