KUALA LUMPUR: From Tuesday (July 1), My50 pass renewals can be made via the Touch 'n Go e-wallet as part of the government’s move to digitalise public transport systems, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
According to Loke, users can also be verified as Malaysian citizens via the e-know-your-customer (EKYC) system.
“Through the app, people can renew their My50 pass by using the NFC (near field communication) enabled TnG card,” he said here on Thursday (June 26).
At present, My50 passes need to be renewed at RapidKL counters and the process takes two to three minutes per person, he noted.
“Imagine if there are 15 customers at one time, waiting times can go over 45 minutes.
“That’s why I always get complaints about long queues at (such) counters,” he said.
Loke said that the digitalisation of the My50 pass will likely reduce long queues at Rapid KL counters.
“This aligns with the aspirations of digitalising national public transportation services and supports the national agenda towards a cashless society.
"Public transportation is not just about providing enough trains or buses. Facilities such as ticket systems are crucial for establishing world-class public transportation," said Loke.
"All planning and development of new towns must consider mobility facilities, including integrated public transport systems, pedestrian infrastructure, and adequate bus stops," added Loke.
Loke urged all public transport operators to explore advanced technological systems, such as adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in payment systems.
“Transitioning to digital technology will enhance operational efficiency and reduce or prevent ‘human error’ during transactions,” added Loke.
The RM50 unlimited monthly travel pass allows commuters unlimited travel on rail and bus services operated by Prasarana.
Last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the My50 travel pass benefited 180,000 bus and rail users in the Klang Valley.
