Public tertiary institutions offer places to over 150,000 SPM leavers

PETALING JAYA: A total of 150,557 SPM school leavers have been offered places to further their studies at public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, and institutions under the Higher Education Division of Mara, says the Higher Education Ministry.

Of that number, 86,589 candidates were offered placements at public universities, 42,058 at polytechnics, 20,427 at community colleges, and 1,483 at Mara Higher Education Division institutions.

This is from a total of 223,624 UPUOnline applications received from SPM leavers.

Student admissions were based on the principle of meritocracy, with all qualified candidates ranked from the highest to the lowest merit scores.

About 17,693 candidates were offered places through the special pathway, including 16,189 B40 candidates, 590 persons with disabilities, 593 athletes, and 321 Orang Asli.

An additional 43 graduates from institutions under the Social Welfare Department were also given offers.

In total, 349 academic programmes were available for this intake, including 41 certificates, 55 foundations, 252 diplomas, and one bachelor’s degree programme.

Candidates who did not receive an offer will be able to appeal to UPUOnline for a period of 10 days, starting on Monday (June 16) at 12pm until June 25 at 5pm.
