PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s ambition to build, own and export artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is not too far off, says Gobind Singh Deo.
However, the Digital Minister said the path to leadership will depend on progress across specific sectors.
He said the country does not intend to remain a follower in the AI race and is laying the groundwork to become a regional leader.
“At the end of the day, we want to lead in AI in the region. That’s something we are more than capable of doing.
“I don’t think that (building, owning and exporting) is too far off. It depends on the sector,” he said at a press conference at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre yesterday.
Gobind said the government’s approach recognises that AI cuts across all sectors; each with distinct needs, challenges and potential.
“There will be sectors where we are already ahead and capable of leading. And there will be others where we must look beyond our borders for the kind of technology or assistance needed to build our ecosystem,” he said.
Citing the work of the National AI Office, he said sector-specific discussions are underway to determine priority areas and existing assets.
“It starts with identifying our national priorities, then determining the solutions needed, the kind of data required and what we already have to support that.
“If we lack capacity, we then look at sourcing the necessary technology to support local development,” he said.
Gobind added that Malaysia is especially focused on strengthening its AI capabilities in areas where it already has talent and infrastructure, while remaining open to international collaboration where needed.
