Honouring mum across generations

Today is Mothers Day but some families have an early start. Among them is the family of 103-year-old Lee Ah Kheng whose son-in-law William Tan is helping her scoop her favourite Teochew porridge. Family comes together to celebrate Mothers Day with porridge and love

GEORGE TOWN: It was a simple home-cooked meal of Teochew porridge, but the gathering was significant with four generations of the Wong family honouring Mothers Day.

Specially catering to centenarian Lee Ah Kheng’s palate, the family feasted on the popular soft porridge garnished with meat, century eggs, prawns, vegetables and other delights for lunch.

Ester Wong, 64, said her 103-year-old China-born mother remained healthy and had never been hospitalised.

However, in the last two months, her mother could only eat soft food.

“She loves noodles and fried chicken but she needs to be on a soft diet now which is why we served Teochew porridge for Mothers Day,” she said.

Wong said having most of the family turn up was nice, with two more great grandchildren added to the family tree this year.

“We are happy to have them come over for a meal as it means quality time with my mother, who is still quite attentive.

“We just need to speak louder to her,” she said at her home in Tanjung Bungah yesterday.

Ester’s son Warren Tan, 37, who lives in Bayan Lepas, said it was always nice to visit the home.

“My brother who lives in Selangor came with his two kids, so it was really fun.

“We both had our daughters last year so everyone was excited to spend time with them,” he added.

Growing up, he and his brothers spent a lot of time with their grandmother.

“I would follow her to the market and help out with the cooking. That’s why I love to cook these days,” he said with a smile.

Warren’s wife Nickcolle Chew, 35, said she was emotional this time as she was a new mother herself.

“It is amazing to be a new mother. My daughter is the best gift of life.

“I am enjoying motherhood, even with all the sleepless nights!” she said.
