IPOH: The 73-year-old woman who was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that crashed into a fast-food restaurant in Sitiawan on Thursday night has died.

Manjung district police chief Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the victim was pronounced dead at 10.56pm on Thursday after receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Seri Manjung Hospital.

He said that seven other victims in the incident – consisting of four men, two women and a girl, all aged between five and 38 – sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the same hospital.

“Initial police investigations at the scene found that an SUV driven by a 29-year-old man was coming from the direction of Kampung Koh and heading towards Sungai Wangi.

“When it reached the intersection in front of the fast-food restaurant in Sitiawan, the driver was believed to have lost control, veered to the right before crashing into the restaurant and hitting eight customers – seven adults and one child,” he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

Hasbullah said police later detained the SUV driver, who also sustained injuries in the accident.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

On Thursday, a video of the incident went viral on social media, showing a white SUV losing control and crashing into the restaurant.
