KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his warmest congratulations to his Singapore counterpart Lawrence Wong on leading the People’s Action Party (PAP) to victory in the country’s general election.
“I wish you and your team continued success as you carry forward the responsibilities of leadership in this new term,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Noting that the prosperity and security of Malaysia and Singapore are indivisible, Anwar said both countries are bound not only by geography but also enduring ties of kith and kin.
“As we look to the future, our two countries are building a habit of deep collaboration at all levels – a vital foundation as we navigate profound challenges to global order and international trade.”
Together, Anwar said, both Malaysia and Singapore have the opportunity to make the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone a shining example of what neighbours can achieve, with conviction and shared purpose, Bernama reported.
“We look forward to deepening this special relationship in the years ahead,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has also extended his congratulations to Wong on the resounding victory of his party in Saturday’s polls.
In a Facebook post, he said the victory was a strong mandate that clearly reflected the people’s trust and confidence in Wong’s leadership.
“I believe this victory is a signal that the people of Singapore have faith in his progressive policies and his vision for the city-state’s future.”
Ahmad Zahid expressed confidence that under Wong’s leadership, Malaysia-Singapore ties would continue to flourish and usher in a new chapter of mutually beneficial regional cooperation.
He said that Malaysia and Singapore are not only geographical neighbours but also strategic partners who share special historical, cultural and economic ties.
“May Singapore continue to prosper and flourish under his administration, and may the close Malaysia-Singapore relations continue to grow for the sake of peace, prosperity and shared wellbeing,” he said.
According to media reports, the PAP retained its supermajority in the city-state’s general election this year, winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats.
