Two held after video of snatch theft bid goes viral

PASIR GUDANG: Two men who attempted to rob a woman have been arrested after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Sohaimi Ishak said the attempted snatch theft happened at Bandar Seri Alam near here on Wednesday at 4.30pm.

“The suspects, aged 25 and 35, were detained on Thursday at 6.20pm also in Bandar Seri Alam,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“The duo on a motorcycle had attempted to snatch the woman’s handbag but failed.”

Initial investigation showed the suspects did not have a criminal record but they tested positive for methamphetamines.

“We also seized a motorcycle, two mobile phones and two sets of clothes from the suspects,” ACP Sohaimi said, adding that both of them have been remanded until May 7 to assist in the investigation.

The 60-second video was uploaded by a user going by the handle “Ah Cheng Loh” to a Seri Alam Masai group on Facebook.

ACP Sohaimi said the case is being investigated under Section 393 of the Penal Code and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He called on those with information on the incident to contact investigating officer Insp Muhammad Hamizan Fakhri at 010-433 8032 or the Seri Alam Police District Contingent hotline at 07-386 1422.
