Cops on the hunt for duo who broke into Sitiawan mosque, stole from donation boxes


MANJUNG: Police are hunting for two suspects following a break-in at a mosque in Sitiawan near here that resulted in the theft of cash from donation boxes.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said they received a report at about 7.30am on Feb 19 from representatives of An-Nasriyah mosque, who discovered the mosque had been broken into.

He said the incident was first noticed by the mosque caretaker at around 5.40am when he arrived to perform dawn prayers.

“A check of CCTV footage revealed that two unidentified men wearing face coverings had entered the premises at about 4.50am.

“Investigations found that the suspects, dressed in dark hooded clothing, gained entry into the main prayer hall by prying open a glass door, shattering it in the process.

“They then forced open three donation boxes and fled with the cash,” he said in a statement Friday (Feb 20).

ACP Hasbullah said losses, including the damage, are estimated at about RM1,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.

He said efforts are ongoing to trace the suspects.
