'I was not arrested', says comedian Saiful Apek

PETALING JAYA: Popular comedian and actor Saiful Apek has clarified details regarding the photo showing him with police that spread on Tuesday (April 29).

Saiful Apek, whose real name is Muhammad Saiful Azam Mohamed Yusoff, 56, told Sinar Harian he was not detained by authorities but that two police officers intervened to break up a dispute involving him and an unknown individual.

He said the incident occurred while he was at an event hosted by Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain in Cheras on Monday (April 28).

"During the incident, I was at the open house of Inspector General Tan Sri Razarudin and after performing and promoting the film '6 Jilake', an unknown person suddenly appeared and provoked me about the film," he said.

"At first, I thought he was joking, but after a while, I lost patience," he said.

"To avoid the situation escalating, I stood up and left so as not to disrupt the event," he said.

"I thought it was over then, but when I went to the car park, the individual continued to provoke me until the police intervened to break up our dispute," he said.

Saiful Apek said what upset him most was the man insulting someone he considers a mentor, Aziz M. Osman, director of 6 Jilake.

"What really bothered me was when he mentioned Abang Aziz and called the film rubbish," he said.

"If it was just my name, I could control my emotions, but this involved someone I consider a mentor," he said when met at the Terbaek Raya open house event hosted by mStar at The Agam, Sungai Penchala, Petaling Jaya, earlier on Thursday (June 27).

The Senario member also apologised to his family and friends who may have been affected by the situation.

"I hope everyone is clear with this statement and I ask everyone to stay calm, especially family and close friends who were shocked by what happened," he said.

"What worried me most was when many contacted the members of Senario, especially Azlee, who we know has a heart condition," he said.

Earlier, an entertainment portal reported that a comedian dressed in a pink baju Melayu, resembling Saiful Apek, was allegedly detained by two police officers.

The actual location and cause of the incident could not be confirmed.
