Investigation reaches 20% completion, Ismail Sabri to be summoned in two weeks, says Azam

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into the corruption case involving former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has now reached a level of between 15 and 20%, says MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.

He said the investigation was still ongoing and Ismail Sabri was expected to be called to give a statement in about two weeks.

"We will call him within two weeks because there are several documents that we have asked him to provide. This case is still ongoing, and as I mentioned, it is related to the declaration of assets.

"When it comes to the investigation of the declaration of assets, the process does take some time because the individual who is given the notice needs to explain the source of the assets to the satisfaction of the MACC as the investigating agency," he told the media after attending the Southeast Asia Anti-Corruption Conference 2025 here, on Tuesday (April 29).

Azam stressed that the crucial matter was to verify whether the declaration of assets was true or false.

"If the declaration is found to be untrue or insufficient, further action can be taken," he said.

The Bera MP is being investigated in connection with a corruption and money laundering case involving expenses and the acquisition of funds for the promotion and publicity of the Malaysia Family programme during his term of service from August 2021 to November 2022.

The case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Prevention of Corruption Act Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

On March 3, Azam was reported to have stated that Ismail Sabri was a suspect in the investigation into the case, following the discovery of approximately RM170mil in cash in various currencies and 16kg of gold bars in a house used as a 'safe house' during a MACC raid. Bernama
