Cops nab suspect over alleged fuel oil dumping near Sg Linggi water treatment plant


SEREMBAN: Police have arrested a 31-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for dumping fuel oil near the Sg Linggi water treatment plant.

District police chief Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said police received a report from an officer of state water concessionaire Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan on April 24.

"The officer claimed that the operator of the treatment plant had, at around 6.20pm on the same day, found traces of fuel oil in the river, believed to have been caused by dumping," he said in a statement.

Following an investigation, police arrested the suspect, who owns a premises selling fuel oil for industrial use near the plant.

Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta said officers from the Department of Environment had also taken samples from the water treatment plant.

However, results showed the water was safe for consumption.

The case is being investigated under Section 430 of the Penal Code for mischief related to water sources.

Offenders can be jailed for between five and 30 years, fined, or both if convicted.
