Former husband of influencer Kim Seri arrested for alleged South Korea travel scam

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested a man linked to an alleged tour package scam involving trips to South Korea promoted by a local TikTok influencer.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the suspect, a 41-year-old Malaysian man, is the former husband of influencer Kim Seri, who had promoted the travel packages on social media.

“The suspect is the owner of Cikgu Kimchi Trading, a company that used to receive payments from victims who were allegedly duped into buying the travel packages.

“He was first arrested on April 21 and remains in Johor police custody for further investigations,” he said in a statement on Sunday (April 27).

Comm Kumar added that checks have revealed eight investigation papers were opened in connection with the suspect's company accounts across several districts, including Johor Baru South, Kota Tinggi, Seri Alam, Iskandar Puteri, Muar and Kluang.

He added that the investigation papers will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping, and a possible fine upon conviction.

Comm Kumar also said that the suspect is believed to be involved in similar scams in other police contingents across the country.

“Investigations into the case are ongoing,” he said.
