ALOR SETAR: A teacher at a Chinese private school here has been remanded until April 23, confirms Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Salawati Saad.

ACP Salawati stated that the remand follows two reports of sexual harassment lodged by two female students aged 15 and 25 at the Alor Setar police station.

"In the first report received on April 18, one of the victims, a former student of the teacher, alleged that she had been sexually harassed through lewd text messages.

"The victim decided to file a police report upon learning that the teacher had similarly targeted other students with the same inappropriate behaviour," she said in a statement.

ACP Salawati added that the second report was lodged the following day by another victim who also claimed to have received sexually explicit messages and requests from the same teacher.

Concerned for their safety and worried that the suspect might target other students, both victims came forward to enable a police investigation.

ACP Salawati confirmed that the suspect was detained on Saturday (April 19) at 4.45pm.

The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 15(a)/11 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The teacher has been terminated by the private school following the arrest by the police.

It was reported that the 34-year-old teacher has been detained by police for alleged sexual harassment at SM Keat Hwa (Independence) here.
