GEORGE TOWN: Easter Sunday celebration brought smiles and excitement to dozens of children as they gathered at the Pro-Cathedral of St George the Martyr for a day filled with spiritual and festive activities.
The morning began with families arriving at the church at Farquhar Street here at about 10am yesterday to listen to stories about Jesus Christ’s resurrection, which celebrates the hope of eternal life.
Sophia Long Xi En, 11, said she was happy to attend the service.
“It was fun and we received eggs as gifts from the church too,” she said.
Sophia said, although she knew about the stories, it was somehow more special to listen to them in church during the Easter Sunday celebration.
“The stories always remind me about the sacrifices Jesus made for the people,” she said.
On Easter Sunday, churches share the narratives found in the New Testament Gospels, which recount the events following Jesus’ crucifixion – the tomb is found empty and Jesus appears to his followers.
Sophia’s brother Noah, nine, described it as a colourful event.
“I have never missed the Easter service and always come to church for the celebration,” he said.
The Pro-Cathedral of St George the Martyr Penang’s spokesperson Petra Oon said the Easter Sunday service began with an English service and was followed by Chinese and Tamil ones.
“Some 150 families participated in the service to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus,” she said.
She said the celebrations were filled with a spirit of unity and renewal and were attended by people from all walks of life.
“It was heartening to see people of different backgrounds come together in faith and fellowship,” Oon added.
She said over a dozen children were also given boiled eggs as gifts after the service.
