Massive operation sees RM6mil of drugs seized, 56 traffickers detained

KUALA LUMPUR: Some RM6mil worth of drugs were seized, while 56 suspected drug traffickers were detained following a massive operation in Kedah and Penang.

The operation, which was conducted by Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) along with Kedah and Penang police, also uncovered a drug processing lab.

Several locations in Kedah, including Kuala Muda, Pendang, Kota Setar and Pokok Sena as well as Bukit Mertajam in Penang were raided.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the operation, codenamed "Ops Kenari", which was conducted April 9 till April 16 managed to bring down two major drug syndicates - the 04 and 18 syndicates.

"56 individuals aged between 20 and 58, including three foreigners, were detained during the operation.

"We also seized an array of drugs worth RM6mil, including 199.83kg of syabu, 10.21kg of erimin 5 pills, 24.82kg of MDMA powder and 11.82kg of heroin. We also seized a pistol with 61 bullets and equipment to process drugs.

"Several vape cartridges and liquid were seized as well," he said when contacted on Wednesday (April 16).

The drugs seized could have been supplied to 1.6 million drug users, the IGP said.

"Three cars, eight motorcycles, jewellery and cash worth RM208,000 were also seized during the special operation," he added.

Of those detained, 50 of them tested positive for drugs, Razarudin said.

"47 of them had prior criminal records.

"We will investigate further to uncover remnants of the syndicates,” he added.

He said the special operation, which was his brainchild, was important to combat the drug menace effectively.

"The operation focused on crippling the drug supply network at its roots.

"The operation was previously conducted in Terengganu," he said.
