KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming landmark visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping next week is expected to elevate Malaysia-China bilateral and trade relations to new heights, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi expressed optimism that the visit would not only strengthen economic ties but also deepen cultural and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
“This visit is a great honour for Malaysia, presenting numerous opportunities to discuss and build upon past achievements and explore new possibilities for the future,” he said when met after the Asean-China Media and Think Tank Forum 2025 yesterday.
President Xi’s three-day state visit, starting on April 15, will be his second to Malaysia after his first in October 2013, during which Malaysia and China upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Fahmi highlighted the importance of China as one of Malaysia’s key trading partners, especially as Malaysia chairs Asean this year.
“There will be much to discuss, and we look forward to welcoming the Chinese President,” he said.On broader global developments, Fahmi reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to its sovereign principles in managing foreign relations.
“Malaysia, as a sovereign nation, of course, has its principles and we have our policies that guide our relations with other countries.
“We stand guided, especially within our commitments as part of Zopfan (Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality) and also within Asean,” he said.
Despite growing challenges to globalisation, including the recent announcement of new US tariffs, Fahmi stressed that Malaysia remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering stronger trade relations worldwide.
“As a trading nation, Malaysia is committed to enhancing closer economic ties with all countries,” he added.
In his speech at the forum, Fahmi emphasised the pivotal role of the media in shaping public perception and fostering greater understanding among citizens, complementing overall diplomatic efforts.
“As governments and institutions collaborate on infrastructure and trade, the media must shine a light on the human stories of cross-cultural friendships, academic exchanges, youth collaborations and community resilience that animate our regional partnership,” he said.
