Melaka burger seller gets seven months jail for kidnapping

MELAKA: A 40-year-old burger seller has been sentenced to seven months in prison after being found guilty of abducting a woman with a learning disability from a playground in Bukit Rambai Idaman.

Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin handed down the sentence to Mohd Sukri Daud, who pleaded guilty as soon as the charge was read on Friday (April 11).

According to the charge sheet, the accused took Nurin Wardina Hairi, 18, with the intention of wrongfully and secretly confining her.

The offence was committed around 3pm at the playground in Taman RI 1, Bukit Rambai Idaman, on April 5.

The charge was framed under Section 365 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison and a fine upon conviction.

Earlier, the accused, represented by lawyer S. Amritpal Singh, appealed for a lighter sentence, citing that his client is merely a burger seller and has to support three young children.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib urged for a proportionate sentence, considering the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the victim is a person with disabilities (PWD).

The court ordered the sentence to commence on the date of the accused's arrest on April 7.
