Warning letter for failing to comply with tobacco product display ban, says Health Ministry

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry will issue non-compliance notifications or warning letters to premises that fail to adhere to the Tobacco Product Display Ban at Sales Counters.

However, its Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, said that the phased enforcement of this ban is currently ongoing until October 1.

"The phased enforcement is still ongoing, and if there is non-compliance, the ministry will issue a notification or a warning letter to the parties involved," he said, as reported by Sinar Harian.

He made this statement during a press conference at the ministry on Tuesday (April 8) in conjunction with the handing over of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine.

The Tobacco Control for Public Health Act 2024 [Act 852], along with the related regulations and orders, has been enforced since October 1 of last year.

This ban applies to 51,000 stores nationwide that sell tobacco products.

Act 852 includes regulations on registration, sale, packaging, labeling, and a smoking ban in public places.

Meanwhile, Dr Dzulkefly mentioned that a session with the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) regarding the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 [Act 723] for private healthcare facilities will be held soon.

The display of medicine prices will be enforced starting May 1 through an order under the act. Section 10 of the act gives the minister the authority to require goods or services to be labeled with their prices.
