MAF chief visits Malbatt peacekeeping troops in Lebanon

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) chief General Datuk Mohd Nizam Jaffar has visited Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) troops serving as peacekeepers in Lebanon.

In a statement on Saturday, the Armed Forces said the visit took place from April 2 to April 4.

“The trip aimed to assess the readiness of Malbatt personnel serving under Malbatt 850-12 on duty with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil).

"It was also an opportunity for those serving to receive updates on the Armed Forces and to continue engagements between the Armed Forces chief and the officers and rank and file,” the statement said, adding that he also held informal engagements with the troops to boost morale.

It added that Gen Mohd Nizam also met with Unifil Force Commander Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz at the Unifil headquarters in Naquora.

“This visit is intended to strengthen ties between the Malaysian Armed Forces and the United Nations peacekeeping force, as well as to discuss the latest developments in the situation in Lebanon.

"He also conducted a courtesy visit to the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, General Rodolph Haykal.

“Both discussed expanded cooperation to ensure stability and peace in the area, as well as to maintain the effectiveness of international peacekeeping operations in Lebanon,” it said.
