Man nabbed for smuggling contraband booze and ciggies in Kota Tinggi


KOTA TINGGI: A foreigner was detained with several boxes containing contraband cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, along with a motorcycle worth RM111,689.

The 34-year-old male was apprehended during an operation by the Muar Sixth Battalion General Police Force at 12.10am on Friday (April 4).

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the suspect was caught at a worker’s shack located at the opposite junction of a golf club on Jalan Kulai-Kota Tinggi.

"We discovered eight boxes containing the cigarettes and 19 boxes of alcoholic beverages with unpaid duties," he said in a statement.

Supt Yusof said the seized items included 350 cartons of cigarettes with 80,000 sticks, 456 cans of alcoholic beverages, and 28 bottles of hard liquor.

"The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting from April 4 until April 10, under Section 116 of the Customs Act 1867, to assist with the investigation," he said.

Supt Yusof stated that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
