SIBU: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has announced ambitious plans to construct a London Bridge-inspired crossing in Sibu, marking the latest phase in the state’s sweeping infrastructure upgrades.
"Bintulu might boast a Golden Gate Bridge. Sibu deserves its own iconic structure. The people of Sibu want a 'London Bridge' linking both sides of town — and we’ll make it happen,” he declared, emphasising its potential to spur agricultural and economic growth in underdeveloped western areas.
Abang Johari said this at a Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri on Friday (April 4) night.
The event was also graced by Governor Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
The Premier highlighted the government’s progress in enhancing connectivity across the central region, citing the recent completion of key bridges such as the Muara Lassa Bridge (linking Daro to Pulau Bruit) and the Batang Rajang Bridge which connects Sarikei to Tanjung Manis.
"Two remaining projects — the Paloh and Igan bridges — are slated for completion by early 2026, fulfilling the vision of a fully integrated road network.
“Though costly, these projects are vital for development,” said Abang Johari, crediting Sarawak’s stable finances and multiracial unity for enabling such investments.
On road upgrading for Nangka, Abang Johari pledged a new dual-carriageway connecting Kemunyang to Pasar Siong and onward to University of Technology Sarawak.
"With this road, traveling time will be slashed from 40 minutes to just seven minutes. The project aims to integrate Kampung Nangka into Sibu’s urban framework, supporting housing and commercial growth," he stressed.
Closing on an optimistic note, the Premier urged collective support: “With stable leadership and unity, we’ll turn these plans into reality — for Sibu’s prosperity and Sarawak’s future.”
