Sarawak finalises list of new councillors

SIBU: The Sarawak Cabinet has finalised the list of new councillors for the state’s 24 Local Authorities, pending approval from the Head of State, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, said that once Wan Junaidi grants approval, the new appointments can be formalised.

“Once approved, we will finalise the date for the swearing-in ceremony. We are deliberating whether to hold a single, consolidated event or individual ceremonies across the more than 20 local authorities,” he said.

He said this to the media at an incentive handover ceremony for newlyweds, newborn babies, and educational assistance for the Pelawan constituency on Friday (March 28) night.

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, confirmed that councillors who have served for nine years or longer will not be reappointed.

“However, council chairpersons and their deputies who have not yet completed nine years of service will be retained,” he clarified.

He also noted that the Chairman of the Sarikei District Council has chosen not to extend her tenure.

“Consequently, a new appointment will be made—an exception to the standard policy.

“Meanwhile, mayors and chairpersons, such as those from the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, the Limbang District Council, and the Mayor of Miri City Council, will be reappointed for a one-year term, despite having served beyond nine years.

“For all other new appointments, the term will span three years, concluding on March 31 2028,” he added.
