GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) has busted a major international drug network, seizing RM6.686mil worth of drugs bound for Indonesia.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said his team had also arrested three men and a woman in a series of raids on the Penang mainland.
In the first operation, Comm Hamzah said two men aged 20 and 27 were picked up following three raids carried out in central and northern Seberang Perai, between 3pm on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.
He said the NCID team seized 1,938 packets of MDMA powder, weighing 38kg, with an estimated value of RM6.42mil.
Also recovered were 24 packets of heroin crystals weighing 6.8kg worth RM65,000, two packets of syabu weighing 946g worth RM30,000, as well as 50.4g of ketamine worth RM10,000.
“The amount of drugs is enough to feed the habit of 100,000 drug addicts,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters in Penang Road yesterday.
In the second operation, Comm Hamzah said a 35-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were arrested in Permatang Pauh in a seven-hour raid, which lasted until 4am on Sunday morning.
“We found six packets of powder and four bags believed to be syabu valued at RM158,384.
“There were also 10 pieces of aluminium foil, with each containing 10 Erimin 5 pills, worth a total of RM2,500.
“The seized drugs are enough to feed about 250,000 drug addicts,” he said.
Comm Hamzah said investigations showed that the syndicates had been operating since the beginning of the year.
All suspects, who tested negative for drugs, had past criminal and drug-related records.
He said they had been remanded for seven days until March 29, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Comm Hamzah said RM1,600 in cash and properties, two cars, two motorcycles and a watch worth RM175,400 were also seized.
