Flood situation improves in Sarawak, worsens in Sabah


KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Sarawak continues to improve, while the number of evacuees in Sabah has risen slightly, as of 8am Monday (March 24).

In SARAWAK, the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat reported that the number of evacuees had dropped to 451, after the closure of the Song public hall relief centre in Kapit on Sunday (March 23), following improved flood conditions.

As of Monday morning, 26 individuals remained at the Kapit youth hostel, while 102 evacuees were housed at the Kapit meeting hall.

In Sibu division, 49 people were sheltered at the Sibu Jaya community hall, 189 at the Kanowit sports complex, and 85 at the Selangau multi-purpose hall.

Meanwhile, in SABAH, the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said that the number of flood evacuees had risen to 473 individuals from 141 families, up from 304 evacuees from 86 families, on Sunday.

A total of 168 people, from 45 families, have taken shelter at Dewan DSP Banir; 167 people from 55 families at Batu 58 St Seno church hall; and 138 evacuees from 41 families at the Selangon hall.

"Additional evacuees were relocated to the St Seno church hall in Batu 58 on Monday morning, leading to an increase in the total number of evacuees. So far, eight villages in Beaufort have been affected by the floods," it said in a statement. - Bernama
