Heart of gold: Mohd Fakhrul Munir, posing after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro last year, will now attempt Mount Everest to help his fellow firefighters.
PETALING JAYA: A firefighter is gearing up to scale Mount Everest to raise funds for his fellow firefighters, including those injured or killed in the line of duty.
Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Fakhrul Munir Mohd Isa, 42, will be the sole firefighter in the Everest charity climb project, In Search of a Golden Heart (Mencari Hati Emas) 2025.
Currently stationed at the Fire and Rescue Department’s Central Region Air Base in Subang Jaya, Mohd Fakhrul Munir has undergone intensive training, including climbing Mount Kinabalu, and is now ready to take on the world’s tallest peak.
“I’m scheduled to depart for Kathmandu, Nepal, on April 7, where I’ll begin several climbs to acclimatise to high altitudes and prevent acute mountain sickness,” he shared in a statement.
“The team will be in Nepal for two months, waiting for the final go-ahead from the Sherpa before proceeding to the summit.
“I am grateful that all preparations are going smoothly. Training on Mount Kinabalu and my experience at Kilimanjaro have greatly helped me adjust to the challenges of high altitudes.”
Having previously conquered Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m above sea level) on Feb 14 last year, Mohd Fakhrul Munir is no stranger to extreme climbs.
His mission, however, goes beyond personal achievement – he is climbing to make a difference.
The charity climb aims to support active and retired firefighters, fund medical treatments such as surgery and kidney transplants, and raise public awareness about organ donation.
Backed by the top management of the Fire and Rescue Department, the project is co-organised with the Kosmopolitan Adventure Club, Gedung Penawar Sdn Bhd, and the Al Baghdadi Group Sdn Bhd.
