KUALA LUMPUR: The government will table Bills to limit the Prime Minister's tenure and to separate the offices of the Attorney General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor (PP) in Parliament on Monday (Feb 23) for the first reading.
Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said these two major reforms are scheduled for their second reading on March 2 and March 3.
She said this during a briefing to editors on the two Bills at the Asian International Arbitration Centre here on Friday (Feb 20).

Further details on both reforms will be made known on Monday.
Previously, Azalina said that separating the powers of the AG and PP would ensure a prosecution process that is more independent and free from political influence.

She added that the move would also strengthen the accountability of legal institutions, particularly regarding the responsibilities of the AG as the government’s principal legal adviser.
Last month, Azalina said that discussions between the ministry and the Parliamentary Special Select Committee showed broad support for the proposed legislation from both government and opposition MPs.
On the Prime Minister's tenure, the Cabinet agreed on Jan 31 to a proposal limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years as part of the Madani government’s institutional reform agenda.

Azalina said the decision is a crucial step towards strengthening accountability, checks and balances, and governance based on the Federal Constitution.
"The proposal to limit the tenure aims to prevent an excessive concentration of power, strengthen the democratic system, and enhance public trust in the country's leadership institutions, in line with mature international democratic practices," she said.
