Floods: All 956 evacuees in Kota Marudu return home as waters recede

KOTA KINABALU: All 956 displaced residents from five villages in Kota Marudu have been allowed to return home after flood waters receded.

With the return of the 311 families, the three temporary relief centres at SMK Bengkongan, SK Teritipan and SMK Tandek were officially closed at 1.30pm on Friday (March 21).

Kota Marudu recorded the most displaced residents after intermittent heavy rain over the past few days triggered Sabah’s third wave of floods this year.

Meanwhile, as of 4pm, although the number of evacuees in Sandakan has decreased, it still has the highest number of displaced residents, with 119 people from 31 families currently sheltering at two relief centres.

Three other districts have maintained their evacuation numbers, namely Beluran with 92 people from 26 families, Matunggong with 11 people from three families, and Pitas with 10 people from six families.

According to statistics from the Sabah disaster management committee secretariat, three other districts have recorded an increase in flood victims.

They are Paitan with 49 evacuees from 16 families, Keningau (38 from 15 families), and Sipitang (25 from 10 families).
