Floods: Relief centre opens in Song to shelter 44 evacuees


SIBU: A temporary relief centre (PPS) has been opened at Dewan Masyarakat Song in Kapit on Thursday (March 20) to shelter 44 flood evacuees following continuous heavy rainfall from 9pm Wednesday (March 19) night until this morning.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee said the PPS was activated at 12.30pm and, as of 7pm, is housing evacuees from Kampung Sejiran, Kebiau Lot, and Rumah Jarop.

In a Facebook statement, the Song district police headquarters reported that the water level at Sungai Batang Rajang had reached 11m, with strong currents observed during monitoring.

The flooded areas include Rumah Gelana, Nanga Tekalit; Rumah John, Nanga Embuau; Kampung Sejiran; Kampung Emperan Mulong; Rumah Jarop, Nanga Sempadi; Kampung Rian and government quarters.

Two schools, SMK Katibas and SK Temalat, were also affected.

Residents in need of assistance can contact the Song police station at 084-777 222.

Meanwhile, Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any flooding to the Song District Office. - Bernama
